Autism Alternative Treatment – Aspergers Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorders

Vaccination, Miscarriage and the HPV4 Vaccine

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The incidence of miscarriage and still birth events from the HPV4 vaccine, Gardasil, surpasses the same event from all other vaccinations.  In November, 2010, the statistics were reported by Steven M. Rubin, PhD on the web site of the National Vaccine Information Center.  My personal scepticism of childhood vaccines began back in the 1970′s during the first swine flu debacle. The most heartbreaking association between vaccines and childhood illness, though vehemently denied by the pharmaceutical industry, is autism.  The relative safety of vaccines, from a miscarriage perspective, along with the complete story, is depicted in an excellent graph by Dr. Rubin.

Alternative medicine offers most of the research and hope for families experiencing these disorders. An excellent resource for this condition is the Autism Research Institute. You will find their web address below at the end of this discussion. The ARI offers exhaustive information on secretin and other beneficial protocols for autistic children. The alternative medicine protocols we will discuss herein include food allergies, leaky gut, yeast or candida overgrowth, vitamins, nutrition, and more.

Autism is a man made epidemic. The Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients reported in January 2002 that in California it took 25 years from 1969 to 1994 for 5,100 cases of autism to be diagnosed. Then, the next 5,100 cases were reported in five years (1994-1999) and now only 2.5 years have passed for another 5,100 to have been reported. Autism is on the rise at an exponential rate. It is in one way or another connected to immunizations, overuse of antibiotics, poor diet, environmental toxins such as heavy metals and the complicated matter of food allergies. Is it only coincidence that the drastic increase in the number of immunizations has paralleled the increase in autism ? Did you know that the average child now has about twenty-five immunizations by early school age? The drug industry has persuaded our state legislatures to make the use of their products mandatory. Beyond that, it is an industry with so much political clout that it has successfully lobbied the government to provide a fund to compensate families whose children were injured by immunizations. The Center for Disease Control maintains that the immunization risk-benefit ratio justifies the harm done to some children. Well, that sounds good until it is your child who was perfectly normal one day and the next day after an immunization was clinically autistic. We are not dogmatically opposed to immunizations. But we are in favor of informed consent starting with the drug companies completely educating the doctors and the doctors in turn informing the parents of the risks. Then, let’s give the parents the right to choose.

There are other environmental factors involved in autism as well. The exposure to heavy metals such as lead are still a threat even though the EPA has done a lot to remove the threat. Then there are insecticides, pesticides and all kinds of toxic chemicals in the environment that have an adverse influence on the immune system, especially of children.

Food allergies and the “leaky gut” are major players in autism. Simple elimination of dairy and gluten containing foods from the diet of autistic children is usually very helpful and should be done with every autistic child.

For parents who are not aware of the wealth of information available but probably not offered them by their pediatrician, autism becomes a lonely venture into the unknown for which they certainly did not ask. Assertive and aggressive parents pursue the information available on the web and other sources. And, they find answers. In our practice we have seen successes ranging from partial but nonetheless significant improvement to complete elimination of autism symptoms. The purpose of this web site is to share that information with those interested parents.

Food Allergies and Autism

Even though a child can be allergic to any food in the kitchen, there are two foods that have been implicated in the development of autism. Those two foods are the proteins from certain grains and milk products. Those proteins or peptides as they are scientifically termed are the gluten from grains and casein from milk. The grains containing gluten are wheat, oat, rye, barley and to some degree, buckwheat. A study done at the University of Florida in 1996 found high allergy to gluten in 87% and to casein in 90% of autistic children. These peptides have an opiate-like effect on the brain of autistic children. It’s like a drug addiction and you will often see children with these allergies actually craving the foods containing them. Sometimes they will go to any length to get their “fix” of gluten or casein. You will see them restrict their diet to exclude nearly all foods except those which make them feel better, namely, the gluten or casein. There are several sources of gluten and casein restricted diets. They are listed below. It is very important that you study and understand the Food Allergy article. It will help you understand why food allergies happen and the impact they have on your child\’s health.

Intestinal Disorders and Autism

A significant number of autistic children have related intestinal disorders which can lead to or complicate the autism picture. These intestinal disorders are very closely related to food allergies. Every autistic child should be evaluated for intestinal candidiasis, parasites, leaky gut, and functional abnormalities. Please study carefully the very important Gastrointestinal Disorders pages of this web site to understand the connection.

Intestinal Dysbiosis and Autism

Intestinal dysbiosis is common to nearly all autistic children. For success, it is imperative that we understand and correct this problem. Living in our intestinal tract are trillions of cells of microbial organisms such as bacteria, yeast and viruses (collectively called “flora”). There are friendly flora that are an asset to gut function and there are unfriendly flora that are harmful to the gut. Under normal conditions all these organisms live in competitive balance and synergy. Problems occur when something happens to upset the normal balance between friendly and unfriendly flora. Like antibiotics, for example. Antibiotics kill friendly bacteria in the gut but do not kill unfriendlies such as yeast. With the friendlies compromised, the yeast flourish. Thus we have dysbiosis. Dysbiosis leads to leaky gut wherein undigested food, toxins, microbes and all kinds of things we really don’t care to know about are leaked into the blood stream. Leaky gut is involved in numerous health conditions. We are most interested in food allergies, common to children on the autism spectrum.

Testing for Dysbiosis

History and symptoms questionnaires give good clues into the possible presence of dysbiosis. Following is a child’s yeast questionnaire. You can complete the questionnaire and the scoring is at the end.

Child’s Yeast Questionnaire

Circle the the score number of each question to which your answer is “yes”.

1. During the two years before your child was born, were you bothered by recurrent vaginitis, menstrual irregularities, premenstrual tension, fatigue, headache, depression, digestive disorders or “feeling bad all over”? 30

Yeast and Autism

Almost without exception, my autistic patients have all exhibited an overgrowth of yeast in the intestine. This is usually referred as intestinal candidialsis which is an overgrowth of the yeast called “Candida albicans”. My observation from years of seeing candidiasis patients has been that there is a tendency for the problem to run in families. Some have suggested that the yeast or at least the predisposition to yeast overgrowth is passed from mother to fetus during pregnancy or delivery. I have found this to be the case with nearly every child presenting with candidiasis. There is a strong correlation with autism here, and you need to educate yourself in the matter of yeast. Study carefully the Yeast and Candidiasis article.

Autism Treatment with Alternative Medicine

It is a monumental task to sort through the mountain of material presented herein and the other resources listed below. I have found that the most effective way to approach the problem is to go back to the beginning of the child’s life, meaning before birth and question any thing that may have happened to trigger the autism onset. Using a detective’s mentality, you will want to ask yourself about anything at all that may have adversely influenced the development of the child; illnesses of the child or mother, accidents, drugs, both prescribed and illegal, immunizations and antibiotics and their timing related to the autism onset, allergies, etc. Did your child have ear infections treated repeated by antibiotics? A big clue. If you can associate any such life events of the child to the onset of autism, you have a uncovered some possible direction as to the treatment protocols. Question everything you can think of, even the unlikely. I am reminded of one patient, not autistic, but the most hyperactive child I have ever had in my office. He nearly destroyed the office and himself in a :30 time period, and his mom said he was medicated! During the course of the history and exam, it was learned that he had fallen a few years earlier and hit the bridge of his nose across the edge of a step. His nose looked like a boxer’s. A simple chiropractic cranial manipulation completely resolved his hyperactivity. The point is, pursue all possibilities as you sort out the causes of your child’s autism. Then, share them with your physician.

I strongly recommend you find a nutrition certified chiropractor or clinical nutritionist to assist you. There are lab tests and other helps such a practitioner can offer which will be of tremendous benefit. You will find them discussed other pages of this site listed below.

Vitamin B6 and Magnesium

Studies have shown a strong benefit from use of vitamin B6 in autism. B6 should be used in conjunction with magnesium and also a good vitamin B complex. The B6 dosage can be from 300 to 500 mg. per day with 200-400 mg. of magnesium based upon the size of the child. You may need to go to higher doses but, again, your nutritionist is an important resource in setting dosage levels. Vitamin B6 has been researched for decades in many different health settings. Unless taken in radical doses of thousands of milligrams per day which no person ordinarily would do, it is not toxic and has no side effects. As much as possible, your child should have three good meals a day emphasizing fruits and vegetables as a source of these vitamins.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil which is high in vitamin A has been shown beneficial in autism. I suggest it be given twice a day at a dosage level which will equal about 2500 i.u. of vitamin A.

Recommended Supplements

Listed below are supplements we recommend for our autism patients. Metagenics sells pharmaceutical-grade nutrition products not available in stores. They are available only through healthcare providers. Products we commonly recommend for this condition include::

Cortico B5B6
EPA/DHA
Candibactin AR
UltraFlora Plus DF

In Summary

You might proceed in approximately the following sequence of actions:

1. Eliminate gluten and casein,. even if they don\’t test positive on a food allergy test.

2. Begin Vitamin B6, magnesium, and cod liver oil.

3. Test for food allergies.

4. Identify presence of candidiasis.

5. Identify gut and digestion problems.

6. Identify life events which may have contributed to the problem.

7. Fix all the problems you have identified under the guidance of a clinical nutritionist.

A very good starting point for any parent with an autistic child is to test him/her with an online Online Comprehensive Health Assessment . I consider this assessment to not be optional but required information on all my autistic patients. The assessment will evaluate your child for food allergies and other risk factors for autism which we have discussed here. It is done completely online at a very reasonable fee.

Toxic Metals: Lead Mercury Cadmium Antimony Aluminum Arsenic

If you are experiencing a health condition, any health condition, that is not responding to medical treatment, is not “curable”, or you have been told you’ll just have to live with it and take some drug that isn’t helping, read on, alternative medicine may be able to offer some hope…….

It is a well established medical fact that toxic metal can be a contributing component to a wide assortment of health conditions yet it is VERY commonly overlooked by physicians. Fortunately, alternative medicine physicians have been at the cutting edge of research and therapy for toxic metal related conditions. Heavy metal toxicity is more common in our population than you might think. For example did you know that autism, ADD, adult ADD, ADHD, adult ADHD and even depression can be a result of toxic metals? If you fall into the group of people who have experienced occupational or environmental exposure you may well be at very high risk for toxic metal induced illness. Furthermore, if you are experiencing an increased body burden of toxic metals, there is probably nothing your physician can do to really help you until the metals are identified and removed.

Toxic metals interfere with the normal functioning of the enzyme systems of our bodies and can thereby cause a wide variety of health conditions. The most commonly recognized conditions are:

* Muscle pain and disorders
* Nerve disorders
* Kidney disorders
* Developmental problems in children such as ADHD, slow learning, etc.
* Cardiovascular disorders including high blood pressure
* Anemia
* Loss of memory
* Depression
* Reproductive disorders including infertility
* Alzheimer’s and Dementia
* Headache
* Fibrocystic breast disease (from caffeine)
* Premenstrual Syndrome PMS
* Cancer
* Osteoporosis
* Fibromyalgia
* Arthritis

We encourage you to take our online Comprehensive Health Assessment to help identify supplements and possible treatment for metal toxicity.

The most important question for you to consider which your doctor probably did not ask is, Have you ever been exposed to any occupational, residential or environmental sources of toxic chemicals or metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony or aluminum? Have you lived in a house with old galvanized water pipes (probably built before 1978)? Have you ever worked in a factory around toxic metals? Do you have a hobby that uses lead or solder or ceramics? Have you done a lot of welding or soldering or been exposed to the clothing of persons who do? Have you renovated an old house? Did you grow up on a farm? Do you smoke or are you exposed to second hand smoke? Do you have any surgical metal implants?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you definitely need to pursue the possibility of toxic metals playing a role in your health. Toxic metals can contribute to such a myriad of health conditions you will need guidance in sorting through all the possible connections. This is where an online Comprehensive Health Assessment can be of great assistance to you. Completion of an online health self-assessment will enable you to evaluate your risk for a number of health conditions which may be associated with toxic metals.

Mitochondrial Disease in Autism and Aspergers

Buy Vitamins & Suppliments NOW!   Back to RxAlternativeMedicine.com

Mitochondrial disease is  becoming increasingly identified as a contributing factor in symptoms of autism and Aspergers symptoms.  Published in the December 1, 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the researchers concluded that through the process of  excess free radical production at the cellular level, miochondrial disease ultimately results in autistic and Aspergers symptoms such as intolerance, ceizures, and cognitive decline.

Free radicals are a normal product of metabolism, but become harmful when not eliminated by natural processes within the cell.  This, it is postulated, is when signs of autism can arise.  The antidote for free radical production is something we have all heard of, antioxidants, such as vitamins and certain minerals.  In my book, Autism: From Symptoms to Solutions, A Parent’s Track to Run On, a chapter is devoted to mitochondrial disease, the autism symptoms related to it, how to test for it, and what  to do about it.

Here is a list of the more common autistic and Aspergers symptoms which may be related to mitochondrial disease:

  • muscle weakness and poor strength doing normal activities such as opening doors or when at play
  • muscle wasting
  • very low energy
  • seizures
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • reflux
  • irritable bowel
  • fainting
  • absent reflexes
  • muscle cramping
  • vision loss
  • hearing loss
  • hypoglycemia
  • short stature

In a nutshell, the mitochondria are small, microscopic, components of the cells of the body.  They are responsible for the production of energy necessary for all body functions, including life itself.  When they are not functioning up to par, classic signs of low energy appear.

Laboratory tests for mitochondrial disease are still in the infancy of development. Organic acids tests and the Cellular Energy Profile are currently favored in my office and by other biomedical physicians.

The central theme of Autism: From Symptoms to Solutions based upon a comprehensive autism symptoms assessment questionnaire. The questionnaire includes mitochondrial dysfunction and  discussion regarding the subject, including appropriate nutritional supplements and laboratory tests.

Aspergers Symptoms, Signs of Autism, and Mitochondrial Disease

When I was privileged to hear Dr. Andrew Wakefield speak, he suggested that mitochondrial disease is currently the popular “whipping boy” in the search for the causes of autism and Aspergers symptoms.  There is no doubt that mitochondrial disease is a player in autism.  In reality, it is probably a player in many, if not most, human illnesses.  You can see this to be the case simply by visiting the website of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.  Their site also explains, in scientific language, the mitochondria and their role in life.

The point I want to make here is this; parents are sometimes, in their quest for answers, over-anxious, and are tempted to believe that the latest report, albeit limited, applies to their child’s autism or Aspergers. They then have the impulse to spend time and money on the subject, which results in disappointment.

There are two ways to do an assessment of your child in regard to mitochondrial disease.  The simplest is to do the online Autism Symptoms Assessment which is on my web site.  The assessment is taken from my book, Autism: From Symptoms to Solutions, A Parent’s Track to Run On.  It offers a convenient method to see for yourself, what effects mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as  fourteen other conditions, such as gluten and casein sensitivity,  intestinal yeast overgrowth, or food allergies, are having on your child’s Aspergers symptoms or signs of aurism.

The second thing you can do is this; if you are convinced your child may be experiencing mitochondrial dysfunction, you can do laboratory tests.  There are a couple issues you need to know about.  First, the gold-standard tests are invasive, require what is equivalent to a muscle biopsy, and are not readily available.  Other tests, such as organic acids tests are good, if your doctor knows how to interpret them. I hope you will read my book which is written to assist parents in assessing and intervening for their children.  As always, if you have questions, you are invited to contact me.

Autism Symptoms and Prevalence

Here are some hard to accept statistics found in the U.S., the most affluent, most powerful country in the history of the world.

  • 1 in 110 children is diagnosed with autism.
  • 1 in 70 to be born will become autistic.
  • A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes.
  • More children will be diagnosed with autism than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.
  • Autism receives less than 5 % of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases.
  • Autism symptoms are treatable but it is expensive, more than the average young family can afford.

Statistics like these should prove there is  room for alternative interventions concerning autism.  Obviously, the medical community does not have all the answers.  In fact, a number of  authorities contend that current medical practices, particularly vaccines, are actually a  cause of the problems.

Autism costs the nation over $100 billion per year, a figure expected to significantly increase in the next decade.  If you do not know a family with an autistic child, one day in the foreseeable future, you will.  The rate of occurance is not slowing down.

The Autism Pandemic

Autism is not a big concern for most people—unless there is an autistic child in the family.  Then, it becomes a very big concern.  Autism symptoms are a composite of symptoms produced by any number of seemingly unrelated, yet, not really unrelated, underlying conditions.  Examples of these conditions include food allergies, intestinal yeast overgrowth, vitamin deficiencies, and others.

Upon publication in September of my book Autism: From Symptoms to Solutions,  A Parent’s Track to Run On, I will begin a year long series of articles about autism and the biomedical treatment approach which has been very beneficial to many autistic children.
Jenny McCarthy was kind enough to write the forward for my book, to her I am much obliged.  Jenny is  a spokesman and activist for the biomedical autism treatment rationale.  She has written three excellent books on the subject and I encourage everyone interested in the subject to read them.

Next week, we will discuss the prevalence of the autism epidemic and some of the theories on how it has come about.

Autism Risk in Siblings

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Back in May, 2010 I wrote:

The Autism Reserch Institute has funded a study investigating the potential connection between vitamin D deficiency and autism.  The investigators need participants for the study.  To participate is very simple. There is no expense and no risk whatsoever.  The purpose is to see if vitamin D can prevent autism development in a newborn child who has an older sibling with autism.  There is significant scientific data which suggests that this theory may be plausible.

Approximtely 7% of families with an autistic child have a second autistic child.  Therefore, to qualify for the study, participating families must have an autistic child currently and are either pregnant or planning a pregnancy.  The vitamin D will be given to the mother during pregnancy and to the newborn for the first 3 years of life.

The investigators are urgently seeking people to participate in this study.  Again, there is no risk and no expense to participants.  If you would like more information, please get in touch with me at the Contact Us link on this web page.

Fast forward to today:

The medical journal, Pediatrics, has published a study reporting that the risk of a family with one child with autism having another child with autism, is double what was previously believed.  The study focused primarily on genetic predisposition.  I cannot help but wonder if that is what the research funding organizations and agencies are asking for, versus studies documenting nutritional and environmental causes, is an issue here. Reference the article cited above.  Interestingly, the vitamin D study has been handicapped by the fact that parents with an autistic child are not interested in having another.  Therefore, recruitment of study participants has been a problem. The risk factors for autism, both known, and suspected are clearly discussed in my book, Autism: From Symptoms to Solutions, A Parent’s Track to Run On.  It is written in a manner understandable by the average parent.  I have had excellent feedback from parents who have implemented the suggested interventions in the book.  You may recommend it to your acquaintances with confidence.

Upward of 70% of Americans have Vitamin D Deficiency

The Kansas City Star recently quoted cardiologist James O’Keefe stating that the general population is predominantly deficient in vitamin D.  African-Americans are especially susceptible because the skin pigment blocks the sun’s vitamin D producing rays.  Some of the lowest lab readings of vitamin D occur in black people.

The good news is that a simple vitamin D supplement will solve the problem nicely.  I discussed the remedies including  sun exposure and vitamin D supplements in my last blog.  In the next blog we will be discussing the health implications of vitamin D deficiency.  There are a couple forms of vitamin D available on the market.  The one most active in the body is vitamin D3.

You should know your cholesterol and your blood pressure numbers.  Now, from current research regarding vitamin D, (technically, it is vitamin D3,)  vitamin D deficiency is becoming a consideration to doctors everywhere.  To have your vitamin D3 level correctly tested by your doctor, ask him/her to do the blood test called (25OH) D3.  Then, when the results come back from the lab, you should be looking at a blood level of 50.  The current lab “normal” levels are around 30 but are soon to be upgraded to more accurately reflect the vitamin D deficiency epidemic we are experiencing. To get your blood levels up to 50 either spend 30 minutes a day with your skin exposed to the sun, or, take 5000 IU of vitamin D3 per day and have the blood level checked again in 2 months.
