Are Your Kids on Drugs?

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

The Wall Street Journal recently reported some staggering statistics on yet another component of our addiction to prescription drugs.  One in four children and 30 percent of adolescents are taking medication for conditions of a chronic nature, usually found only in adults.  Think about it.  Is this really what we want for the future owners of our country?  Obese, prescription dependent, deconditioned, out-of-shape leaders?

  • ADHD drugs:  24,357 million prescriptions.
  • Asthma drugs: 45.388 million.
  • Antidepressants: 9.614 million. Our kids are depressed??
  • Sleep aids: 307,000.
  • Antipsychotics: 6.546 million.  Our kids are psychotic??
  • Statins (for high cholesterol).  Not my kids.  Are your kids that out of shape?
  • High Blood Pressure medicine: 5.224 million.
  • Meds for type 2 diabetes (heretofore an exclusively adult, obesity-related condition): 424,000. The dismal future for obese children.

Is this a problem in your family? Give me your feedback.

General Rx Alternative Medicine Health Principles Appropriate to All Types of Cancer

Twenty-five years ago anyone such as the brilliant Dr. William Donald Kelley who had the audacity to suggest that cancer was environmentally or nutritionally related was labeled a “quack”. Today, the official position of medical authorities is that at least 70% of cancer has an environmental or nutritional component. And, finally, the protocols of Dr. Kelley are being investigated by government funded studies. Alternative medicine has subscribed to that position for decades. Environment and nutrition are two areas you can deal with without drugs or physicians. You can take charge of this component of your health and you will be surprised at what appropriate changes will do for you.

There is an incredible maize of confusing information on the different non-medical or alternative cancer therapies. You have probably already discovered that fact as you have searched the web. The information is so vast and the therapies so numerous that we will offer only a broad outline of how you can organize your search with the goal of arriving at a logical plan to research alternative cancer therapies. You will find at the end of these pages listings of books, web sites, and resources that can provide you with information. If you combine the general principles we provide you here with what those resources have to offer, it will give you a good start in your quest for better health.

You will greatly appreciate the services of an alternative medicine physician to guide you through the information on cancer that is out there. To approach the subject without a professional consultant will be a very confusing and frustrating and probably unsuccessful endeavor.

Healthy bodies do not get cancer. Sick bodies get cancer. To conquer cancer you must first get that concept firmly in mind. If you have breast cancer, it is not just your breast that is sick. The same applies to prostate or any other kind of cancer. Cancer must be viewed for what it is; failure of the body to maintain health. The lump or bump that the surgeon removes is not the whole problem. It is a manifestation of the problem. So often, we are told after surgery that “we got it all”. Yes, the lump has been removed but health has not been restored. The lump may appear again. To overcome cancer is probably the biggest challenge you will ever face. It is not a problem where you can go to the doctor and say “here is my body, fix it”. Medicine can fix the lump but it is up to you to regain your health. Your doctor will probably not offer much help in this regard. It is your challenge to return your body to that state wherein the cancer will not reoccur. It requires a tremendous amount of self discipline. But, you can do it. Thousands of others have regained their health and so can you. To do so, you must think in terms of what it was that gave you cancer and what you must do to reverse the problem. Regardless if you are currently undergoing cancer therapy or not, these principles still apply. With that in mind, here are the steps you will want to consider to achieve your goal:

Step 1. Try to identify the causes of your cancer.

a. Are you a smoker??

b. Did you spend time working in a toxic environment? Heavy metals such as lead and cadmium are implicated in cancer as well as many other illnesses. Cadmium is found in cigarette smoke, welding rod, and old galvanized water pipes. How about chemical exposure such as insecticides or other products?

c. Do you have allergies to petroleum products?

d. Have you recently gone through a period of high stress?

e. Have you spent a life time of bad eating habits especially void of fruits and vegetables?

f. Are you obese? Chronically constipated?

g. Have you used drugs or medications such as birth control pills long-term? Have you abused alcohol?

h. Have you lived near industrial sites giving off pollutants? Near high tension power lines? Near freeways?

i. Have you been exposed to radiation?

Step 2. Work to reverse the identified causes.

a. If you smoke, quit. If you are not willing to quit smoking, probably the protocols we outline here are not for you because of the self discipline they require. Frankly, if you will not quit smoking, there probably isn’t much hope.

b. Regarding toxins and their effect on your health, the Doctor’s Data Lab offers hair and other tests which can identify dozens of environmental toxins and food allergies. We enthusiastically recommend their tests to help you identify hidden causes.

c. Detoxify your body. There are a number of good ways to do this and you will want to choose a detox protocol which fits your specific needs. Again, a clinical nutritionist experienced in cancer will help you.

d. Adopt a strict organic health food diet. Our food supply contains pesticide residue, herbicide residue, hormones, antibiotics and numerous other additives and preservatives which compromise the immune system. Your goal is to eat as closely to the garden as possible. Avoid all the chemicals. If there are words you can’t pronounce on a food label, it’s probably an additive that you should avoid. Among the worst are nitrates and nitrites which are primarily used as preservatives in meats.

e. Limit your intake of red meat. In his book Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation Dr. William Donald Kelley stated that meat should be restricted to fish and fowl and should be eaten before 1:00 P.M. All meat should be organically grown. Studies have shown that vegetarians live longer.

f. Limit your intake of animal fat. Fat has been linked to the incidence of several types of cancer. Particularly bad and to be avoided at all costs are the partially hydrogenated oils or trans-fats. These are the oils used for deep frying and in snack foods.

g. Eat a high fiber diet. Fiber from fruits, vegetables and grains have shown to be protective against various forms of cancer.

h. Avoid alcohol, white sugar, white flour, caffeine, soda, fried foods, junk foods, processed, packaged foods, and fluorinated water and toothpaste.

i. Take supplements appropriate to your metabolic type and cancer. If you don’t know your metabolic type, take our FREE Metabolic Type Test Here are a few core supplements which are common to most cancer dietary protocols. It is beyond the scope of our purpose to detail how each of these products work or if they are appropriate for you. However, the resources listed at the end of this article will do just that.

1. Pancreatic and digestive enzymes. We usually recommend the product “Wobenzyme”. Also consider a hydrochloric acid digestive supplement.
2. Antioxidants including B complex, vitamin A, E, C, D, CoQ10, folic acid, n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and selenium.
3. Herbs including garlic, onion, indol-3-carbinol (from broccoli), curcumin, Esiac tea, green tea, and a whole food supplement such as Juice Plus.
4. Minerals, preferably in the ionic form which is much better absorbed at the cellular level. Minerals associated with improved cancer risk are calcium, magnesium, iodine, selenium, and zinc.
5. Other basic products include omega three and six fatty acids, conjugated linolenic acid, flax oil, whey protein, shark cartilage soy (especially in breast and prostate cancer. Estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer patients should NOT use soy products), lactobacillis acidophilus, and apricot pits (source of the controversial Laetrille).
6. Breast cancer patients should be aware of a product called “calcium d-glucarate”.

j. Avoid obesity. Yes, obesity is associated with a variety of types of cancer. If you are overweight, loose it!

Step 3. Fine tune your musculoskeletal system with chiropractic.

Chiropractic works with the nervous system. Virtually every body function has a nervous system component. Chiropractic is based upon the premise that spinal misalignment can adversely affect your nervous system. For optimal health, you need the spine and nervous system checked and maintained by your chiropractor. Adjunctive modalities which chiropractors may offer are acupuncture, physical therapy, and massage. In addition, some chiropractors are board certified in clinical nutrition which makes them your choice for primary care alternative medicine physicians. Nutrition certified chiropractors can usually order your lab tests, monitor your progress and work with your other physicians.

Step 4. Prayer. There are good medical studies that have shown that people who are prayed for get well faster than those who are not prayed for. In the studies, the patients did not know they were being prayed for and still exhibited better improvement than those similar cases who were not prayed for. Find a good Bible centered evangelical Christian pastor and ask him and his church to pray for you.

Step 5. Your Spiritual Health . If you or a loved one have cancer, reality says that you may be closer to meeting God face-to-face than you were before you had cancer. With that in mind, we are obligated to offer you the following verses from the Bible describing the state of man and what each individual can do to find peace with God. Adapted from a booklet published by Billy Graham, please consider:

1. We have all fallen short of God’s standard. Romans 3:10.
2. We’re all sinners. Romans 3:23.
3. Because we’re sinners, we all die physically and spiritually. Romans 6:23.
4. Christ solved the sin problem by dying in our place. Romans 5:8.
5. We have to accept the free gift of salvation by belief in what Christ did. Romans 10: 9-13.
6. Having believed, we can know for sure we are saved and on our way to eternal life in heaven one day. I John 5:11-13.

If you have never done so, you can talk to God in a prayer something like this: “God, I know I am a sinner and that Christ died to pay the penalty for my sins. I now invite Jesus Christ to be my personal savior and forgive me of my sins. Thank you for hearing my prayer”. If you prayed that prayer, find another Christian and tell him/her about it.

The Bible, in First John 5:11-13 assures you that when you die, whether from cancer or other causes, if you prayed this prayer, you will have eternal life in heaven with Him.

Finally, we urge to complete a personal Online Comprehensive Health Assessment . Your assessment is a convenient and inexpensive way to get a picture of whether the various conditions discussed in this web site are playing a role in your health. It is all done online and offers valuable information you can take to your alternative medicine practitioner.

It may be possible to avoid AIDS completely with a strong immune system in spite of being HIV positive. Studies have shown that HIV positive individuals with poor immune function are at greater risk of contracting AIDS than those whose immune systems are functioning up to par. That statement, taken from the medical literature should get your attention. If you learn nothing else from this web site, acting on that immune system statement alone will add years to your life and life to your years. Correcting underlying problems such as yeast infections, hypoglycemia and other yeast infection related disorders will give you a jump start toward living with HIV. Alternative medicine offers protocols for HIV which you will not hear about in your physician’s office. Read on to learn about control of yeast, the effectiveness of olive leaf extract and other HIV protocols.

If you would like a more custom information related to your immune system take our online Comprehensive Health Assessment .

The information contained in this web site is required reading for everyone who has an interest in HIV and Aids . It offers a wealth of knowledge compiled for you from the exhaustive accumulation of literature on AIDS. The information contained herein is from the archives of alternative medicine only and your information for the traditional medical protocols will be found elsewhere. Our prayer for you is that you will study this information closely and that it will benefit you in your HIV/ AIDS quest.

The HIV and Aids information offered by alternative medicine is different from traditional medicine in that it includes protocols for actually improving your immune system. The medical industry, on the other hand, offers you mostly HIV drugs and leaves the notion of improving your immune status to others. You may wonder why conventional medicine pays little attention to such an important aspect of health as strengthening your immune system. The reason may be that natural immune boosting protocols and products such as vitamins cannot be patented, are not sold by prescription and therefore offer little profit incentive to drug companies. Since much of what your doctor learns comes in one way or another from the drug companies, he is not likely to have received the information available through alternative medicine and this web site.

How to Boost Your Immune System

HIV and AIDS patients need to understand that they are not just fighting a virus which destroys the immune system. No, there are MANY things which compromise the immune system. Happily, there are also many protocols from alternative medicine which enable you to enhance or boost your immune competency. So, as we study the subject, we find there are two major good health promoting steps which really need to be well understood by the HIV patient. They are, simply:

1. Eliminate all elements of your environment, diet and lifestyle which compromise the immune system.

2. Add everything you can from an environmental, dietary and lifestyle perspective to enhance and boost your immune system.

Unfortunately, many HIV victims are prone to environmental, dietary, and lifestyle habits that compromise the immune system long before the HIV virus is contracted. For example, the use of street drugs, smoking, alcohol, poor diet and hygiene and the like are notorious assaults on the immune system. Not only that, but such bad habits set the stage for the onset of other opportunistic immune offenders such as candidiasis. For those people, cleaning up the act, so to speak, is especially difficult. However, it could have life or death consequences and is imperative if success is to be expected. I have spoken at HIV support groups where the number of people in the room who were smoking was appalling. Smoking is just really not acceptable for anyone wanting to achieve good health. Another observation is that HIV seems to be prevalent in persons of lower socioeconomic status. This, too is unfortunate. However, it costs nothing to quit bad health habits. In fact, it pays because money spent on bad habits could then be used to purchase helpful, immune boosting supplements.

Olive Leaf Extract is a potent antimicrobial agent which has been reported very effective in reducing the total body viral load in HIV and Aids patents. In anecdotal literature it has even improved patients to the point of being HIV negative! This supplement is most important and should be utilized by every HIV positive person. An excellent book on the subject is Olive Leaf Extract by: Dr. Morton Walker

Beyond the known common bad habits which adversely affect the immune system, there are a number of not-so-obvious immune compromisers about which your doctor may not have told you. Yet, they play a very, very important role in your health. Those immune enemies include, among others, candidiasis, parasites, leaky gut, food allergies, adrenal insufficiency, low thyroid, toxic metals such as lead and cadmium, and inadequate nutrition. Utilizing an online in-depth health assessment questionnaire, a Comprehensive Health Assessment will do an evaluation of those issues in your life and give you a risk rating for each. The report you receive from the assessment gives you specific information on identifying those factors in your life. The assessment is an easy and inexpensive online way get some insight into these issues’ impact on your personal situation. We strongly recommend it. So, there we have the first step outlined above, the identification of immune compromising factors.

Protocols for Addressing the HIV Problem

If you are HIV positive, there are certain pages of this web site that are required reading and understanding for you. Even if your Comprehensive Health Assessment did not have a moderate or high score on these subjects, they are very important for you to understand from an immune system perspective. The pages where we discuss them are listed below. Do every thing you can to follow the protocols listed in those various pages to boost your immune system. The culprits discussed therein are notorious immune compromisers and need to be strongly dealt with and put to rest for a lifetime.

Your Diet

Adopt a “health fanatic” attitude in your eating. Stop use of alcohol, tobacco, street drugs, prescription drugs, especially antibiotics and steroids as much as possible, caffeine, soda, sweets, sugar, and junk food. You should also minimize the consumption of milk and dairy products. Avoid all artificial food additives such as preservatives, colorings and sweeteners. Aspartame (Nutrisweet) should not be used. Partially hydrogenated or “trans-fats” should be avoided like the plague. These fats really interfere with your immune system by producing the pro-inflammatory hormones called prostaglandins. The fats and oils used in deep frying and most snack foods and fast foods are the culprits. Partially hydrogenated fats are a major dietary threat to our health. The fast food restaurants are quietly removing trans-fats from their cooking. They don’t want to get sued. These products all compromise your immune system so get them out of your life.

Try to eat an alkaline diet emphasizing fruits and vegetables, at least 5 servings a day. This is very important and cannot be overemphasized. Try to maintain a Mediterranean diet of primarily fruits, vegetables, fish, fowl, olive oil and grains. Red meat should be reserved for special occasions and should be baked or broiled. Eat organic foods when possible. Drink only distilled or at least good quality filtered water. Off the shelf bottled water is not good enough because you never know for sure what’s in it.

Exercise

Exercise moderately. Excessive heavy exercise can compromise your immune system but moderate exercise is very good. A study published in 1991 demonstrated the positive effect of exercise on the immune systems of HIV positive males. See the Exercise of this web site.

Supplements

There are many excellent immune boosting supplements on the market and you need to know about them. If you scored high on any health issues addressed in the Comprehensive Health Assessment , as discussed above, you should place top priority on the supplements recommended in this web site relating to those issues. Otherwise, the supplements are prioritized here in their approximate order of importance.

Olive Leaf Extract is a potent antimicrobial agent which has been reported very effective in reducing the total body viral load in HIV/AIDS patents. In anecdotal literature it has even improved patients to the point of being HIV negative! This supplement is most important and should be utilized by every HIV positive person. An excellent book on the subject is Olive Leaf Extract by Dr. Morton Walker, published by Kensington Books.

Glutathione is an amino acid within the cells that is powerfully linked to antioxidant function and the immune system. It plays a major role in the detoxification processes within the cells, liver and kidneys. Numerous studies have demonstrated glutathione to be a critical factor in the development of immune depression and AIDS. Glutathione alone when taken orally is difficult to assimilate. Therefore, other supplements which the body uses to synthesize glutathione must be taken instead. They are:

* Whey protein products
* N-acetylctyteine (NAC)
* Vitamin C
* Selenium
* Alpha-lipoic acid

Vitamin C has been the subject of a number of studies and anecdotal reports in the medical literature. The usual protocol is to take the maximum dose tolerable before diarrhea begins. This is most effective using a buffered C which allows a much higher dose. Benefits of vitamin C to HIV and AIDS patients have been most encouraging as reported in Lancet in 1990 and Medical Hypotheses in 1984.

Beta carotene has been shown to increase immune cell counts in HIV subjects taken at the level of 180 mg. per day.

Vitamin A is a common deficiency in HIV patients. There are a few different forms of A and you should consult with your nutritionist for the best form and dosage.

Coenzyme Q10 is beneficial. It is expensive at the recommended dosage of 200 mg. per day but should be included in protocols even at a lower dose.

Protein malnutrition is commonly seen in HIV and AIDS patients. In addition to the healthy diet suggested above, persons experiencing clinical signs of AIDS related disease manifestation should take a good quality protein supplement.

Vitamins B6, B12 and Folic acid are essential to any nutrition program. HIV and AIDS patients are consistently found to be deficient in these and other nutrients. The problem is that their requirements to bring these nutrient levels up to normal ranges often exceeds that of HIV free people. Therefore, their dosage requirements are higher. Again, a good clinical nutritionist is a great asset.

Selenium is a potent immune boosting and antioxidant trace mineral. As mentioned above, it is an important precursor to glutathione.

L-glutamine is an amino acid which is essential for healthy intestinal function. Persons who are experiencing any type of intestinal disorder should be supplemented with this product. It should not be taken in certain cases of liver disorders. If you have liver disease, Reye’s disease or other nitrogen metabolism problems, consult your nutritionist.

General nutrients including protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids are found to be deficient in HIV patients. One study showed benefit for patients when given these nutrients as a multiple in a supplement containing aloe vera.

Herbs are beneficial in their ability to enhance liver detoxification and in some cases such as olive leaf extract, directly affect HIV. Detox herbs include:

* Silymarin
* Goldenseal
* Black Radish
* Dandelion Root
* Aloe Vera is excellent for the digestive tract and may have a direct effect on HIV as well.

Liver Detoxication

Liver detoxification is very important in all illnesses and especially so in immune compromised people. The phytonutrients in whole foods are key players in the health of your liver and thus the importance of a good whole food organic diet. People who have abused their health with bad life style habits are probably in need of liver detoxification beyond what is available through whole food. A good technique, though sounding a little disgusting, is the coffee retention enema. Coffee enemas have been used by thousands of cancer and other seriously ill patients for decades. Your clinical nutritionist can give you directions on this surprisingly effective procedure.

It has been said “you are what you eat”. In alternative medicine, we are more likely say “you are what you digest”! There are many health conditions that have their root in gastrointestinal disorders. gastrointestinal disorders including intestinal yeast infection, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohns disease, acid reflux and numerous others are frequently part of the picture in other seemingly unrelated conditions. Health problems such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue , food allergy, hypoglycemia, stress related fatigue and a long list of others often have a GI component which, when undetected leaves the patient and physician with less than satisfactory outcome. Of all, intestinal yeast infections are probably the most overlooked or even denied by physicians.

This article will address three common gastrointestinal disorders which your doctor may not have adequately considered. There are many symptoms related to these three conditions which are frequently overlooked by physicians, even gastrointestinal disorders specialists. The symptoms range from the obvious such as gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea to those not usually thought of as relating to the digestion including arthritis , muscle and joint pain, allergies, food sensitivities, yeast infection, immune disorders , asthma, headache and many others. Good digestion is paramount for good health. If you have a health condition that is not responsive to medical diagnosis and treatment and you have anything but the best of good regular eating, digestion and elimination habits, you should carefully consider the following information. However, for a complete picture of the gastrointestinal impact on your health it is imperative that you study the related articles on this site. Please see related articles at the end of the gastrointestinal disorders article.
Gastrointestinal Disorder One

Hypochlorhydria is a condition of insufficient hydrochloric acid (HCl) levels in the stomach. As acid secretion decreases with age, many people are deficient in HCl and do not know it. Medical literature states that 40% of people past the age of 60 are low on HCl. There are even studies of asthmatic children being low on HCl who, upon receiving supplemental HCl experienced improvement in their asthma symptoms. There is a problem. It lies in the fact that the symptoms of low HCl are nearly identical to the symptoms of excess HCl and consequently we find people taking antacids looking for relief of excess HCl when they in reality have LOW HCl. Just exactly the opposite to what they should be doing. HCl insufficiency leads to incomplete digestion, poor absorption and resultant symptoms related to poor nutrition in spite of the fact that you may be eating well and even taking supplements.

You can do a simple test to see if HCl may be of benefit to you. You should do it under the auspices of your clinical nutritionist if you try it. That is simply to take an HCl tablet after eating and observe your response. You should see a decrease in gas, belching, or bloating. Do not do this test without professional supervision if you have a history of stomach ulcers, irritation or inflammation. There are other tests for hypochlorhydria which your physician can perform if indicated including a Comprehensive Stool and Digestive Analysis (CDSA).

If you are hypochlorhydric, you can supplement your digestion by taking hydrochloric acid supplements. They should be taken after meals. Most all good nutrition supplement companies carry an HCl product usually referred to as “Betaine HCl”. Other oftentimes beneficial supplements include replacement of the friendly bacteria in the gut with Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Increased dietary fiber will promote healthy digestion especially soluble fiber which is found in vegetables. Certain herbs stimulate gastric acid production including gentian, ginger, and peppermint.
Gastrointestinal Disorder Two

Malabsorption occurs for a variety of reasons. These include hypchlorhydria (low stomach acid), pancreatic digestive enzyme insufficiency, and intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance in the intestinal bacterial colonies called “flora” which normally reside in the gut). Malabsorption occurs when, though a person is eating well and maybe even taking supplements, the nutrition that is being consumed is not making it into the blood stream. Rather than being absorbed it is being eliminated through the stool.

The presence of malabsorption can be confirmed by a laboratory test called the Comprehensive Digestive and Stool Analysis (CDSA). Another less comprehensive test is the Urinary Indican test which measures incomplete digestion of protein. It can be ordered by your clinical nutritionist.

If you are experiencing malabsorption, you will get the guidance you need from lab testing to know what to do about it. Typically, hypochlorhydria is addressed by taking HCl tablets. Pancreatic enzyme insufficiency can be supplemented with pancreatic enzyme or vegetable based enzyme tablets. Intestinal dysbiosis will best be treated by first removing abnormal overgrowth of unfriendly microscopic flora and or microscopic parasitic organisms and replacing them with friendly flora. This is not the end of the story regarding malabsorption but for our purposes here further in-depth discussion would only be confusing. Suffice it to say that if you have a CDSA performed, the report your practitioner receives back from the lab will include a detailed explanation of the lab findings. A knowledgeable clinical nutritionist will provide you with all the dietary guidelines, supplements and other information to successfully deal with malabsorption.
Gastrointestinal Disorder Three

Parasites come in many different forms. Usually, when we think of parasites, we think of intestinal worms or some other disgusting critter. However, the smaller microscopic organisms are much more common findings than worms. These organisms include yeast, amoeba (that’s the single cell one you looked at under a microscope in school), giardia, and several strains of bacteria. All of these “unfriendly” organisms can be found in the intestinal tract under normal conditions living in balance or synergy with normal healthy “friendly” bacteria. It is when an overgrowth of the unfriendly cultures occurs at the cost of lost friendly cultures that it becomes a deterrent to good health. If you have spent time in foreign countries, even a little, had parasites as a child, lived in close proximity to animals, have ever had food poisoning or unexplained diarrhea, or have a history of parasites, you could be entertaining these unwanted visitors. If you suspect you may have parasites of some type, talk to your clinical nutritionist about a Complete Stool and Digestive Analysis (CDSA). Treatment of parasites is specific to whatever organism is being addressed. Any practitioner who is familiar with the CDSA will know what to do.

The online Comprehensive Health Assessment is a good tool to evaluate your gastrointestinal symptoms and their relationship to other conditions discussed throughout the RXAlternativeMedicine.com. Medical research continues to document the connection between good gastrointestinal health and a number of other difficult health conditions. The good news is that the G.I. conditions discussed above and their related symptoms are treatable through alternative medicine and nutritional protocols. If you have completed the Comprehensive Health Assessment and believe there may be a G.I. component to your health, present this information to your alternative medicine practitioner.

A Comprehensive Health Assessment can be a great benefit to persons with GI symptoms or conditions listed below in the “related articles RXAlternativeMedicine.com”. It is done online, is simple and inexpensive. It will address the GI related health conditions which you may be experiencing. In our practice, all patients with gastrointestinal related symptoms complete this assessment. We could not do our job as nutritionist and alternative medicine physician without it. Another test that would be beneficial to take to your alternative medicine physician is our FREE Metabolic Type Test. Consider both tests before you see your physician or alternative medicine physician.

For reasons we will discuss below, food allergy, especially the delayed type has been most frequently considered a problem by alternative medicine practitioners. Happily, it is becoming more and more detected by traditional physicians. Food allergieshave been implicated as being either directly causal or contributory to the development to an astounding 60 different medical conditions. These conditions include many ordinarily not thought to be related to food allergy including ADD, ADHD, adult ADD, adult ADHD, Autism, fibromyalgia, and Hypoglycemia Treatment. They can effect virtually every part of the body and range in severity from mild gastrointestinal upset to life threatening illnesses such as celiac disease. The delayed reaction type of food allergies discussed in detail below, are commonly overlooked in medical evaluation because the testing for them has until recently not been reliable. Happily, that has changed, but the typical doctor on the street is yet to learn about it. Common conditions frequently associated with food allergy include:

* Acne
* ADD, ADHD
* Adult ADD
* Adult ADHD
* Autism
* Arthritis
* Asthma
* Bed-wetting
* Chronic fatigue
* Chronic sinus problems
* Craving of sugar or sweets
* Craving of most any food
* Depression or anxiety
* Fibromyalgia
* Headache
* Irritable bowel syndrome
* Intestinal yeast infections
* Skin rashes
* Yeast infection symptoms

Sadly, these are the some of the very most frustrating conditions to both physician and patient, yet, the food allergy connection is usually overlooked!

How do food allergies develop? Please see the Gastrointestinal article and review the development of the “leaky gut” which is a major contributor to food allergies. A second common cause of food allergies happens when foods are introduced into an infant’s diet too early in life. Ideally, an infant should be breast fed until 5 or 6 months. Then, the less allergenic foods like fruits and vegetables can begin being added to the diet. The most common food allergy is milk and can begin even from milk-based infant formulas or from a mother drinking milk while nursing. A third possible mode of food allergy development is when the parents are also allergic. If one parent has allergies, the infant has an increased risk of allergies which doubles if both parents are allergic. Of course, the diet of the mother while pregnant can also influence the immune system of the infant and highly allergenic foods such as milk should not be consumed by a nursing mother.

There are two types of allergic reactions to food; “immediate” and “delayed”. Not to be confused with food “intolerance” or “ sensitivity” such as lactose intolerance (milk sugar), these reactions are true immune responses with potentially far-reaching adverse effects in the body. The immediate reactions are those which people usually are aware that they have. Such reactions occur within an hour or two after eating the food. It is easy to make a correlation with how one feels an hour or two after eating the offending food. On the other hand, the delayed reactions may not occur for from a few hours to even a day or two after eating the food. It is common for a person, for example, to drink a glass of milk today and have an asthma attack tomorrow, never dreaming of a connection between the two. It is these delayed reactions that go overlooked in medical offices everywhere. They wreck havoc in people’s health and lives for years, sometimes a lifetime, without being identified. When identified and properly treated, food allergies can become history in a person’s life giving an outcome of freedom from symptoms that may have plagued him/her for years.

The most accurate diagnostic test for food allergies is what is referred to as an “elimination diet”. In our fast paced day and life style, it is next to impossible to accomplish. Happily, there is now available a simple blood test which will test for dozens of food allergies on one blood sample. This is the test mentioned above that has heretofore been unreliable. Now, we have a few labs that have perfected the test to within acceptable tolerances of accuracy and the results they are providing us are truly fantastic.

You will want to get the direction of a practitioner who is familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of food allergy. If your lab test is positive for food allergies, your practitioner will give you the correct plan to alleviate the symptoms, usually what is called a “rotation diet”. Very importantly , he/she will also want to assess the cause of your food allergies, that is, what started the problem in the first place. The leaky gut, as discussed in the Gastrointestinal is a consideration of paramount importance in the development of your recovery plan. In addition, you will want to take supplements which are known to be helpful in returning your gut to normal. Some of the more commonly used products include:

* Glutamine
* Ultra Clear Sustain (Metagenics Company)
* Vitamin A
* Zinc
* Enzyme supplements
* Hydrochloric acid supplements
* Friendly flora supplements
* Seacure (a hydrolyzed fish protein product)

Your practitioner will know which supplements are best suited for you.

Allergy is a state of altered reactivity or over reactivity of the immune system to environmental or food substances which are called by the general term, “allergens”. It can be a reaction to literally anything from food allergy to chemicals to airborne substances such as pollen. Allergy is often overlooked as a causal factor in other conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Often, physicians view allergies as specific individual reactions and fail to adequately consider the immune response as a whole. Alternative medicine looks at the problem differently. Visualize yourself as sitting on a teeter totter. Sitting on the other end is your allergies. The allergies are cumulative, that is, they pile up on the other end of the teeter totter. For example, you may have pollen allergy, piled upon weed spray allergy, piled upon chemical allergy piled upon a number of different food allergies. As long as they don’t reach a certain level of accumulation they do not overwhelm your weight on the other end of the board, your feet stay on the ground and you have no immune reaction. When they do, you begin to get allergy symptoms. Then, if you remove them one by one, your immune system gets better, and you eventually get your feet back on the ground. Simultaneously, your symptoms get better. The point is, your immune system doesn’t really differentiate which type of allergy it is responding to, it just responds. Therefore, you can have food allergies along side airborne allergies such as pollen. But, if you can eliminate some of the allergens, say, the food allergies, your overall immune reaction decreases and your symptoms decrease. It gets your end of the teeter totter back on the ground. Please study the food allergy page for an in depth discussion of food related allergies. One of the best things to do for airborne allergies is to place a good quality air filter in the bedroom of the allergy sufferer.

It is important to understand how allergies get started in the first place. If the parents of a child have allergies, the probability is increased for the child to also have them. However, it is known that exposure to allergenic substances in infancy is a primary cause of allergies later in life. Dust mites which are everywhere and especially in carpets can sensitize an infant. Parents should be careful about allowing infants to play on the carpet without a blanket or other floor cover. The same applies to food allergies. Infants should be breast fed until at least the age of 6 months. Then solid foods can be gradually introduced. The use of non-breast foods at an early age, especially cow’s milk, can sensitize the infant to food allergies. Usually, their immune systems are capable of handling mild foods after six months of age.

Nutrients known to be beneficial for allergies include vitamin C, bioflavonoids, vitamin E, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, quercetin, pantethenic acid, and Omega 6 fatty acids. Herbal remedies include echinacea, Siberian ginseng and garlic.

Alcoholics are almost always nutrient deficient. This may be a result of the poor diet associated with alcoholic lifestyle. In addition, they may be predisposed to alcoholism by pre-existing conditions and nutritional deficiencies. To do a truly comprehensive assessment of the alcoholic state, other physical and nutritional factors in addition to the traditional social and psychological evaluation must be considered. Those often overlooked factors include chronic intestinal yeast infections or overgrowth, food allergy, cortisol or adrenal gland insufficiency, hypothyroidism, functional hypoglycemia and nutritional status. Unfortunately, the usual case is that alcoholics are given excellent emotional support but their physical status goes wanting. Please read on for more information on this essential component of alcoholism.

Melvin R. Werbach, M.D. in his book Nutritional Influences on Illness: A Sourcebook of Clinical Research states “There are many nutritional deficiencies which may be caused by excessive alcohol ingestion and the deficient nutrient intake often associated with alcoholism. By boosting the nutritional intake, not only may it be possible to reduce the toxic effects associated with alcoholism, but there is preliminary evidence that alcohol craving and the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may also be ameliorated”.

Laboratory Tests

Alcoholism is often associated with a problem in the metabolism of amino acids. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein. It would be valuable to have an amino acid test run. Talk to your alternative medicine physician about an amino acid test. RxAlternativeMedicine offers an Online Comprehensive Health Assessment that can assist you in learning what supplements you need to boost your recovery.

Vitamins and Supplements

Nutrients which studies have shown to be helpful in addressing alcoholism include:

* GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is effective in reducing both alcohol cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
* Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Folic Acid, C, and E.
* Minerals, especially Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium, and Selenium.
* Amino Acids from protein.
* Essential Fatty Acids. Omega 3 Fatty Acids found in fish oil as well as Omega 6 Fatty Acids found in Evening Primrose oil are also good.
* Food Supplement. “Juice Plus” is an excellent fruits and vegetables in a capsule supplement.

Recommended Supplements

Listed below are supplements we recommend for our patients with alcoholism. They are available factory direct from the Metagenics Company. Metagenics sells pharmaceutical-grade nutrition products not available in stores. Products we commonly recommend for this condition include: :

GLA Forte
Glycogenics
Multigenics (Order without iron for men)
MultiMin Chelate
Ultra Balance Protein
EPA/DHA Omega 3 fish oil

Diet

It is imperative that alcoholics adhere to a strict health food diet. All foods containing caffeine, high sugar, “Nutrasweet”, highly processed, packaged foods, junk foods, fast foods, deep fried foods, soda and partially hydrogenated oils are to be strictly avoided. In other words, a good healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and some red meat are required.

Given the complexity of recovering from alcoholism, I strongly urge people to get under the guidance of a qualified physician/nutritionist who understands the subjects we have discussed here.

Does your child have a Ritalin deficiency???? Do you have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) ?

The alternative approach to ADD, ADHD and Adult ADD is quite different than what you will find in the traditional medical office. In the medical office, you will receive drugs such as Adderall or Ritalin. In alternative medicine, you will likely be tested for such things as food allergy and treated with non-prescription yet equally effective food supplements and dietary modification. Though Adderall and Ritalin have their place with attention deficit disorder, you will find them to be greatly over-prescribed as we will discuss below. Please also visit our Headlines and News.

The discussion to follow focuses on childhood ADHD. Adult ADD and adult ADHD are similar in nature and the principles you read below apply to the adult ADD and adult ADHD sufferer as well.

If we were to subscribe to the current medical thinking, children who suffer from ADD ADHD are all deficient in Ritalin. Of course, we know this to be absurd. But, if they’re not deficient, what is the CAUSE of this pervasive developmental disorder? What is happening with a culture such as ours where prescriptions for the drug increased 600 percent in the decade of the 90′s and in some schools 20% of the students are medicated with it? The US consumes five times more Ritalin that rest of the world combined.

The chemical composition of Ritalin is that of an amphetamine or “speed”, very close in structure to cocaine. It has become an easily obtainable drug of abuse. It is in the top 10 controlled drugs stolen from pharmacies and doctor’s offices. Children sell their medication to classmates who crush and snort it like cocaine. There is even some controversial evidence that prescription Ritalin use may contribute to long term juvenile delinquency and illegal drug abuse.

It is not our purpose here to discredit Ritalin but rather to put things in perspective. In some cases it is the only choice. Happily, there are excellent alternatives to Ritalin that most physicians are not aware of. Our purpose here is to stimulate your thinking to the possibility that our society is not correcting the cause of ADD ADHD but rather is simply drugging it into submission.

With that said, let’s address the known contributing causes of ADD ADHD. Those known causes, any of which may singularly or in combination with others contribute to development of ADD ADHD include:
Food Allergies Improper Diet Mineral Deficiencies
Fatty Acid Deficiencies Amino Acid Deficiencies Vitamin Deficiencies
Yeast Overgrowth Food Additives Lead Toxicity
Poor Parenting Social Factors Antibiotic Overuse
Over-consumption of sugar and junk foods

Of the list above, the most commonly overlooked by physicians, educators, and parents are food allergies, yeast overgrowth, antibiotic overuse and improper diet. If you would like to see if your child may be experiencing any of these problems, you can complete an online Comprehensive Health Assessment for your child. In our clinical experience the information gained from the assessment has been a valuable yet inexpensive way for parents to uncover hidden contributing factors their child\’s ADD/ADHD. The web site for the assessment is listed at the end of this ADD/ADHD section.

Food Allergy and ADD ADHD and Adult ADD

There are two sets of symptoms whereby allergies and specifically food allergies manifest themselves in children. The two sets are “tension” and “fatigue”. Combined, they are referred to as the “Allergic Tension-Fatigue Syndrome”. Almost invariably, these children will exhibit a pale “washed out” skin color, dark circles under the eyes and stuffy, runny nose, Many times they will also exhibit sweating, stomach aches, leg aches, headaches and bed wetting.

The “tension” symptoms include hyperactivity, clumsiness, poor dexterity, inability to relax, oversensitivity, insomnia, and sensitivity to light and noise. The “fatigue” symptoms include tiredness, achiness, sluggishness, inability to concentrate and irrational behavior. These symptoms can all, in one way or another, be a result of food allergies.

The most common offending foods are all dairy products, yeast, wheat, corn, soy, citrus, eggs, chocolate, peanuts, artificial colors, flavoring, and preservatives.

Food Additives and ADD ADHD

The pioneering research relating ADD to food additives was done by Dr. Ben Feingold. He found that in some cases food additives, preservatives and colorings will trigger ADD/ADHD. You can read packaging labels and eliminate all additives from your child’s diet and watch to see if there is an improvement. If you observe improvement after four or five days, you can then add back the additives one by one, one day at a time and see which one(s) causes a return of hyperactivity. There are thousands of additives and not all are clearly identified which makes your job of identification really complicated. Sometimes the food label will simply say “coloring” or “flavoring”. This makes your job of identification more difficult. Otherwise, look for terms such as “yellow no. 5″, “BHA” or “BHT”. Any big word on a label which you don’t recognize is probably a chemical additive. If you find additives to be a problem you may want to see a physician who specializes in desensitizing children of allergies of this type.

Lead

Surprisingly, even in this day of lead free paint and gasoline, lead is still a common toxic metal in our environment. In fact, some states even recommend that all children be tested for lead. Children put things in their mouths and we sometimes don’t recognize the potential lead exposure. The main sources are:

* Paint applied before 1977
* Auto exhaust in areas near highways
* Soil near highways
* Galvanized water pipes in older homes (This is a MAJOR source of heavy metal intoxication, not only lead but cadmium and others).
* Industrial sources such as battery factories, lead smelters, etc.
* Metal jewelry of all types contain surprising amounts of lead
* Hobbies utilizing lead such as fishing sinkers and bullets

Long term lead toxicity can be tested by a simple hair analysis. Lead poisoning is detected by urine or blood testing. Any alternative medicine practitioner will know how to do these tests for you. It is important to know that urine and blood testing are only accurate in cases of more recent lead exposure. Only the hair will disclose longer term toxicity. Many traditional physicians don’t understand this difference so you may have to see an alternative medicine or environmental physician to test your child. Confirmation of heavy metal toxicity is done by what is called a “challenge” test.Please see the Toxic Metals page of this site for further details.

Diet and Food Supplements

There have been several studies which showed that children with ADD/ADHD have low levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are a form of fat found primarily in ocean fish oil and flax seed oil. Other studies found that when supplemented with omega 3′s ADD/ADHD children improved in their symptoms. Please see Recommended Supplements below.

Diets low in allergenic foods and supplemented with calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins, especially vitamin B6, gave a favorable response in hyperactive children as reported in the Lancet medical journal. However, I strongly recommend that you pursue the yeast, toxins and allergens potential before rushing out and starting your child on these supplements. Try to identify the CAUSE first.

There is emerging scientific evidence that “chemical imbalance” can be a problem. This involves the neurotransmitters of the nervous system including serotonin and others. If there is a neurotransmitter problem it can be treated with non-prescription amino acid therapy. Ask your alternative medicine physician about this if everything else fails.

Yeast

Please see the Yeast and Candidiasis pages of the web site for details on this very important factor. Of all the causal factors discussed above, yeast probably is the most commonly involved with ADD/ADHD.

Resources

A Comprehensive Health Assessment is an appropriate self-assessment for persons suspected of having ADHD or Adult ADD. It will give you invaluable assistance in determining whether factors such as yeast or food allergies are playing a role in your ADD ADHD or Adult ADD. We strongly recommend and support this assessment. It has been very helpful in our ability to guide our patients to recovery from ADD ADHD.

Toxic Metals: Lead Mercury Cadmium Antimony Aluminum Arsenic

If you are experiencing a health condition, any health condition, that is not responding to medical treatment, is not “curable”, or you have been told you’ll just have to live with it and take some drug that isn’t helping, read on, alternative medicine may be able to offer some hope…….

It is a well established medical fact that toxic metal can be a contributing component to a wide assortment of health conditions yet it is VERY commonly overlooked by physicians. Fortunately, alternative medicine physicians have been at the cutting edge of research and therapy for toxic metal related conditions. Heavy metal toxicity is more common in our population than you might think. For example did you know that autism, ADD, adult ADD, ADHD, adult ADHD and even depression can be a result of toxic metals? If you fall into the group of people who have experienced occupational or environmental exposure you may well be at very high risk for toxic metal induced illness. Furthermore, if you are experiencing an increased body burden of toxic metals, there is probably nothing your physician can do to really help you until the metals are identified and removed.

Toxic metals interfere with the normal functioning of the enzyme systems of our bodies and can thereby cause a wide variety of health conditions. The most commonly recognized conditions are:

* Muscle pain and disorders
* Nerve disorders
* Kidney disorders
* Developmental problems in children such as ADHD, slow learning, etc.
* Cardiovascular disorders including high blood pressure
* Anemia
* Loss of memory
* Depression
* Reproductive disorders including infertility
* Alzheimer’s and Dementia
* Headache
* Fibrocystic breast disease (from caffeine)
* Premenstrual Syndrome PMS
* Cancer
* Osteoporosis
* Fibromyalgia
* Arthritis

We encourage you to take our online Comprehensive Health Assessment to help identify supplements and possible treatment for metal toxicity.

The most important question for you to consider which your doctor probably did not ask is, Have you ever been exposed to any occupational, residential or environmental sources of toxic chemicals or metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony or aluminum? Have you lived in a house with old galvanized water pipes (probably built before 1978)? Have you ever worked in a factory around toxic metals? Do you have a hobby that uses lead or solder or ceramics? Have you done a lot of welding or soldering or been exposed to the clothing of persons who do? Have you renovated an old house? Did you grow up on a farm? Do you smoke or are you exposed to second hand smoke? Do you have any surgical metal implants?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you definitely need to pursue the possibility of toxic metals playing a role in your health. Toxic metals can contribute to such a myriad of health conditions you will need guidance in sorting through all the possible connections. This is where an online Comprehensive Health Assessment can be of great assistance to you. Completion of an online health self-assessment will enable you to evaluate your risk for a number of health conditions which may be associated with toxic metals.

Understanding the causes of allergy is helpful as we seek relief from allergy symptoms.  The problem is somewhat inherited.  If parents have allergies, the probability of a child having an allergy or two is increased.  Another cause is exposure to unsuspected allergens in infancy. For example, dust mites which reside in carpets and furniture can cause allergies.  It is important for infants to be on a blanket as much as possible when on the floor.  Other environmental allergens such as cigarette smoke obviously should be avoided.

As children grow and are able to play outside it is good to let them do so.  The bacteria and other substances in plain old soil are good for building of a child’s immune system.  Do NOT let your child play in the yard if it has been sprayed for insecticides or herbicides.  Such chemicals are suspected to play a role in development of childhood disorders such as autism.  It is much better to leave the yard all natural, have a few weeds and let the kids play in it.  Household chemicals used inside the house are also a threat to a child’s health so keep that in mind too.

If you have allergies, take the online Comprehensive Health Assessment. It is a simple and inexpensive way to evaluate your health from an alternative medicine viewpoint. It often gives people insights into allergies which they did not suspect, especially food allergies which I will discuss in my next blog post.
