Why Eskimos Have the Worst Incidence of Osteoporosis

One in three post-menopausal women will suffer an osteoporosis related fracture.  The risk is a greater threat to women's health than cancer of the breast, cervix, and uterus combined!  The Eskimos have the worst incidence of osteoporosis and certain African tribes have the least.  Why is that?  Two reasons.

    1.  Eskimos do not receive enough sunshine exposure.  Sunshine causes our skin to synthesize vitamin D which is necessary to prevent osteoporosis.  Africans get plenty of sunshine.

     2.  Eskimos get relative less fruits and vegetables.  Both foods are high in phytonutrients which protect against development of osteoporosis.  Africans get lots of fruits and vegetables.

 So, where are you in this scheme of things.  What is your risk of osteoporosis and what to do about it?  If you are not getting 30 minutes of sunshine exposure directly to your skin each day you need to take a vitamin D supplement.
